Call for Action: Tell Congress to Reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program
Right now Congress is debating whether to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It expires on September 30, 2011. This is the tenth time in three years this program has been set to expire. It’s time we stop the band-aid approach to flood insurance and give the program a long-term extension. For this reason we are urging Congress to reauthorize NFIP for five years.
Do you know what happens every year when the deadline nears? Lenders stall closings, adding more uncertainty to our already tentative marketplace. Over 20,000 communities nationwide depend on this program to buy and sell real estate. You simply cannot acquire a mortgage without flood coverage, and a policy cannot be issued without the assistance of this program. Maintaining available and affordable flood insurance for all Americans that need it is vital to keeping the market running smoothly. Please take action today.

Call for Action: Maintain Federal Loan Limits
FHA and the conforming loan limits of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac expire at the end of the federal fiscal year, September 30. If lawmakers take no action, the limits drop to 115 percent from 125 percent of the area median home price, and the high-cost limits are reduced to $625,500 from $729,750. Such a reduction would destabilize the housing market at a time when sales are struggling to recover, NAR says. The association is asking lawmakers to support bi-partisan legislation, H.R. 1754, by Gary Miller (R-Calif.) and Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), to keep limits where they are. Please contact Congress today, tell your lawmakers to support this bill and maintain current loan limits. Learn more about the issue in a short video with NAR Government Affairs. Access a chart showing how loan limits would change in your area.
